Gothic Press was founded in 1979 by Gary William Crawford to publish books and periodicals in the field of Gothic literature. In the years 1979 to 1987 the press produced six issues of the journal GOTHIC, which featured articles on the Gothic from the eighteenth century to modern horror. Subsequently, the press published THE HORROR FICTION NEWSLETTER and the horror poetry magazine NIGHT SONGS. In recent years, the press has published THE GOTHIC CHAPBOOK SERIES, which features fiction, poetry, and literary scholarship and criticism. New from the press is Mark Rich's story chapbook THE SOUND OF DEAD HANDS CLAPPING. Forthcoming in March 2010 is Charlie Bondhus's novella chapbook MONSTERS AND VICTIMS. Forthcoming in May 2010 is Philip Challinor's AKIN TO POETRY: OBSERVATIONS ON SOME STRANGE TALES OF ROBERT AICKMAN. Also available from the press are free online databases for J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Fritz Leiber, Ramsey Campbell, Walter de la Mare, and Robert Aickman studies. In May of 2006, Crawford began the online journal LE FANU STUDIES. ABOUT GARY WILLIAM CRAWFORD
Crawford is the author of POEMS OF THE DIVIDED SELF (1992), IN SHADOW LANDS: POEMS (1998), THE SHADOW CITY (2005), THE PHANTOM WORLD (on the final ballot for the poetry Stoker from the Horror Writers Association 2008), VOICES FROM THE DARK (2009), and two short story collections, GOTHIC FEVERS (2000) and MYSTERIES OF VON DOMARUS (2006). His scholarly works include RAMSEY CAMPBELL (1988), J. SHERIDAN LE FANU: A BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHY (1995), ROBERT AICKMAN: AN INTRODUCTION (2003), the modern fiction section of HORROR LITERATURE: A CORE COLLECTION AND REFERENCE GUIDE (1981), entries in THE PENGUIN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HORROR AND THE SUPERNATURAL (1986), essays in DISCOVERING MODERN HORROR FICTION I AND II (1985 and 1988), DISCOVERING CLASSIC HORROR FICTION (1992), SURVEY OF MODERN FANTASY LITERATURE (1983), and THE DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY (1997 and 2002). He has numerous other poems, short stories, and articles in the fantasy press. Several of his short stories and poems are in the e-zine The Gothic Revue, which is now defunct but can be archived here. His essay, "Death, Rebirth, and Existentialism in Fritz Leiber," is now out in a book of essays on Leiber from McFarland Publishers McFarland - Publisher of Reference and Scholarly Books. His "Afterword" to My Aunt Margaret's Adventure by J. Sheridan Le Fanu is now available from Swan River Press: The Swan River Press. His essay, "Friedrich von Schiller, Immanuel Kant, Swedenborg, and Le Fanu" is now in Le Fanu Studies. His essay, "Some Observations on Gothic Poetry," is now out in the poetry magazine Illumen. His essay, "Approaches to Mystery: The Numinous in Le Fanu's Uncle Silas and Robert Aickman's The Late Breakfasters," is now in Le Fanu Studies. Also in Le Fanu Studies is his essay "A Tale Told Again: Le Fanu's 'The Evil Guest' and A Lost Name." His short stories, "Curtain Call," "His Ghost," "The Beautiful Signature," "Gangrene," and "The Seminar" are now in the archives of Bewildering Stories Bewildering Stories. His poetry collection THE PHANTOM WORLD was published in 2008 by Sam's Dot Publishing: SAM'S DOT PUBLISHING. Poems written in collaboration with Bruce Boston are now out in Boston's collection Double Visions from Dark Regions Press www.darkregions.com.
